Dental Exam – Checkups
Exams give us an opportunity to see how your dental care is going at home and to evaluate the current state of your teeth and gums as well as other issues that may crop up in your mouth. We can detect issues and correct them before they become problematic.

Teeth Cleaning – Oral Hygiene
Regular cleanings are necessary to remove the plaque that builds up on your teeth. Plaque forms on your teeth even with regular brushing and flossing. Plaque forms from bacteria in your mouth and can harden on your teeth over time causing gingivitis (gum disease) and more serious periodontal diseases affecting both the gums and bones surrounding your teeth. Regular cleaning, checkups and a good home dental routine help keep your mouth and teeth healthy and disease free.

Oral Cancer Screening
During regular checkups your dentist and hygienist will check your mouth, head, and neck for signs of disease including oral cancer. Detecting changes to these areas can be an early warning sign of things to come. Pain is not always the fist sign of trouble. Your oral health is an important indicator of general health. Regular checkups including cleanings are an important component of your overall health.

Sealants
Sealants are an excellent way to reduce the incidence of cavities in a young person’s mouth. A sealant is a thin layer of material that is bonded to the biting surface of the back teeth creating a barrier that protects the teeth from getting cavities.

Bonding and Aesthetic Recontouring
This technique can be used to alter the shape of worn or chipped teeth – providing the damage is not too great. Composite materials are used to reshape defects and close spaces between teeth. The results can be performed quickly, but the patient should be prepared to replace these restorations more frequently. Better long-term alternatives typically involve veneers or crowns.

Root Canal
A root canal is performed to save a tooth when there is damage. A root canal treatment removes the nerve and blood supply, cleans, and reseals the tooth. A crown/ cap is often required post treatment to protect the tooth.

Caps/Crowns
These are used when a tooth is densely filled or was previously treated with a root canal treatment. Crowns provide excellent strength to the tooth while improving overall aesthetics.

Implants
A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium metal. It is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of the natural tooth. An artificial replacement tooth is attached to the implant. The implant acts as an anchor to hold the replacement tooth in place.

Bridges
Bridges are restorations designed to replace missing teeth. It involves reducing the size of the teeth next to the space that acts as supports. There is a limit to the length which can be bridged, and there needs to be tooth support at each end for long term success.

Partial & Full Dentures
It’s still important for denture wearers to keep up with regular checkups to watch for changes or disease in the mouth and gums.

Veneers
Seeking porcelain veneers near you? We provide premium veneers in Dartmouth! These are thin porcelain surfaces that are bonded over the front tooth surface.

Whitening
Bleaching is a very effective technique for lightening teeth. It will not, however, alter the appearance of existing fillings, crowns and veneers.

Extractions
For many reasons, you and your dentist may decide that you need to remove a tooth. Decay, damaged or broken teeth, gum disease or poor tooth position may mean extraction is the best option. Missing teeth can lead to other problems in your mouth including issues with the jaw, shifting teeth and chewing. For these reasons it is important to discuss replacement options.
